What is the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation (“MacArthur”) Fellowship in Nonprofit Law?

MacArthur is pleased to announce that it will be offering a one-year fellowship in nonprofit law to a recent law school graduate to work in its Office of the General Counsel.  The purpose of the fellowship is to provide exposure to the legal work of MacArthur and provide experience and exposure to the field of nonprofit law.

The fellowship will commence in the fall of 2023 at the Foundation’s headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.  The Office of the General Counsel of the MacArthur Foundation currently consists of a nine-person team that includes the Foundation’s Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, a Senior Associate General Counsel and Assistant Secretary, and two Associate General Counsels. The Office of the General Counsel works closely with all Foundation departments on matters involving state and federal tax-exempt law, general corporate law, intellectual property law, international law, investment matters, corporate governance and regulatory issues.

The Ford Foundation’s Office of General Counsel will also be hosting its own fellow.  MacArthur and Ford will work together to provide some shared programming and learning for the fellows.  There may also be potential opportunities for exposure to the legal departments at other private foundations.

Who can be a MacArthur Fellow in Nonprofit Law?

Eligible applicants are students at an accredited law school or a tax related LLM program graduating in the spring of 2023 and judicial law clerks completing their clerkships in 2023 and taking the bar exam prior to the commencement of the Fellowship.   Applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences that are historically underrepresented in the legal profession, or applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity, and applicants who have demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in tax exempt law or of public interest are encouraged to apply.  Consideration will be given to applicants’ background, experiences, commitment to working in this field, and academic record.

The Legal Fellow will receive a salary of $75,000 plus benefits available to full time employees of MacArthur
