Life Span is hiring a Supervising Attorney to work primarily in the north and northwest suburban area including the Skokie and Rolling Meadows courthouses. Supervision will include two staff attorneys and one paralegal. This is a hybrid-remote position based at our Des Plaines, IL office. We will consider filling the position with two part-time applicants.

Life Span is a nationally known leader in the provision of services to survivors of violence and their children. We are a financially secure organization with over 40 years of consistent and reliable funding. Our comprehensive services include criminal court advocacy, representation in civil protective order cases, expert representation in family law cases, immigration services and counseling for survivors and their children. Our work encompasses such issues as police domestic violence, human trafficking, immigration, employment issues, sexual assault civil no contact orders, the effects of trauma on clients and their children, teen dating violence, and the criminalization of survivors. Our agency has two sites, one in Des Plaines and one in Chicago. Our services are available in many languages including English, Spanish, Polish and Arabic and are free of charge. Our agency provides national leadership in policy work and systemic advocacy, and our staff has trained advocates, lawyers, judges, counselors and other professionals in Illinois and across the country on critical issues and innovative practices.

General Job Description:

Position responsibilities include civil representation in orders of protection, family law and civil no contact orders for clients with domestic violence and/or sexual assault issues.

Supervises, trains, and evaluates staff attorneys and a paralegal.

The supervising attorney works with counseling, advocacy and immigration staff to provide a coordinated response to clients’ needs.

Participates in systemic advocacy and policy reform.

Qualifications:

• Licensed to practice law in Illinois
• Minimum of five years of experience in domestic relations law
• Three years of trial experience
• Expertise in the Illinois Domestic Violence Act and the IMDMA
• Demonstrated interest in public interest/poverty law
• Spanish language skill or other language at the bilingual level is a plus for this position.

Location and Hours:

The Supervising Attorney position is a full-time, 40 hours per week position based in Des Plaines, IL.

The office is located in downtown Des Plaines, steps away from the METRA station, and accessible via the Blue Line/Pace transit. Des Plaines is a Northwest Chicago suburb, near O’Hare, Park Ridge, Mount Prospect, Norridge, and Arlington Heights suburbs. Free building parking is available.

Hybrid Remote Position:

This is a hybrid-remote position after onboarding and completion of training. Remote work up to 16 hours
per week at the discretion of Life Span. Internet access is required. Must be accessible and available during
work hours by phone and email to perform essential functions of this position.

Compensation: Life Span values staff as our most important resource and we offer a competitive full-time annual starting salary of $93,000 dependent on experience.
