The City of Chicago Department of Law is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel (ACC) in its Collections, Ownership and Administrative Litigation Division. The ACC will work in one of two practice areas: Collections or Ownership. The Collections Unit is responsible for financial litigation including prosecuting and defending debts due and owing to the City at Administrative Hearings, Circuit Court and Federal Court, negotiating settlements and payment agreements, handling probate and foreclosure claims, creating policies and advising Client Departments on current collections issues and laws. The Ownership Unit is responsible for preparing and reviewing title searches to determine property owners, responsible parties, and proper service of process in preparing for litigation for Municipal Code violations. The ACC will abstract, compile, and examine documents from public records and review chains of title to identify property owners and responsible parties, help develop and implement procedures and protocols, conduct law clerk training, and work on a variety of special projects. The ACC will work under the general supervision of the Deputy, Chief, and Supervising Attorney of the Division and assist in the counseling of various Client Departments.

  • The ability to exhibit leadership and initiative on assigned tasks;
  • Superior writing, research and editing skills;
  • Experience providing client counseling;

Preference may be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Experience in determining real property ownership
  • Experience in reviewing and analyzing property deeds, mortgages, liens and foreclosures
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience in collections matters
