The City of Chicago’s Department of Law is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel III (“ACC”) to work in the newly created Risk Management & Compliance Division.  The Risk Management & Compliance Division develops risk mitigation policies and compliance procedures to minimize areas of legal risk and promote efficient operations for the Law Department and client departments. Attorneys in the Risk Management & Compliance Division will work closely with the Deputy of Risk Management & Compliance and other Divisions in the Department on evaluating and assessing litigation strategies for legal risk and potential liability exposure. Attorneys in the Risk Management & Compliance Division will also support and assist the Deputy of Risk Management & Compliance in preparing responsive answers to audit inquiries, forecasting litigation costs, and working with city insurance carries to analyze potential risk. The ACC will work on a broad range of matters related to risk management and compliance issues under the general supervision of the Risk Management & Compliance Division’s Deputy Corporation Counsel.

Qualifications

Graduation from an American Bar Association accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree and admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligible for admission on motion to the Illinois Bar pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • Litigation experience in state or federal court in one or more of the following areas:  assisting in jury or bench trials, taking or defending depositions, drafting pleadings and other court documents, drafting substantive motions, arguing substantive motions in court, handling oral arguments and evidentiary hearings, or clerking for a state or federal court judge;
  • Experience in relevant practice areas, including risk management, compliance, insurance law or worker’s compensation, or audits;
  • Ability to research and analyze complex issues;
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to a broad audience;
  • Ability to take initiative and assume responsibility for assigned tasks;
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, monitor, and control workflow to meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work well with colleagues, supervisors, and client department representatives; and
  • Commitment to public service.
