Position Summary:

The School of Justice and Public Safety at Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor/Assistant Professor of Practice to contribute to the school’s program in Paralegal Studies. The selected individual will serve as a faculty member and/or director of the American Bar Association (ABA)-approved Paralegal Studies program. This is a nine-month, non-tenure-track term appointment with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The individual will teach face-to-face and online courses within the Paralegal Studies curriculum and may develop coursework in a substantive legal specialty area.  The individual will be expected to hold office hours to advise/mentor students, serve in department governance-related matters, and perform other professional duties as directed. While serving as program director of the ABA-approved Paralegal Studies program, the selected individual will provide program leadership including, but not limited to, performing duties to support accreditation. Additional duties may include curriculum and program development, assistance with course scheduling, recruitment and retention of students, advising, preparation of articulation agreements, convening and leading program faculty and advisory board meetings, supporting the program’s undergraduate student group, coordinating internships, and other duties as determined by the Director of the School of Justice and Public Safety. The work requires daytime campus availability with some evenings and weekends depending upon teaching schedules and recruiting/retention events.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must:

Possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school and knowledge of the paralegal profession.
Have demonstrable experience working as or with paralegals (please explain in cover letter).
Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include:

An active law license (admitted to and in good standing with a state bar).
College-level teaching experience.  Networks/connections with the local, regional, or state bar to facilitate student internship/job placements and recruiting (please explain in cover letter).
